The Invisible Boundaries Project Launch was held at the Orangery in Arboretum Park on Friday, 7th August 2015. Several artists, local councillors, community members and Artcore’s staff & volunteers gathered together to celebrate the beginning of the project, underlying the theme of being good neighbours, the idea of neighbourhood and giving back to the community.

More than 50 people attended the event, including the Deputy Mayor of Derby, Cllr. Mark Tittley and the Leader of the Council, Cllr. Ranjit Banwait. The Deputy Mayor began the launch by giving an inspirational speech about the importance of Arboretum Park and the historical connections to it.

Cllr. Ranjit Banwait welcomed and expressed his and the Council’s support to Artcore’s initiative of bringing the diverse people of Derby together by providing different services and activities, Deputy Police Commissioner and Cllr. Hardyal Dhindsa shared his childhood memories and connections to the park and the importance of creating awareness of this historical place to the new and migrant communities residing in the area.

An inspiring talk by renowned artist John Newling, a pioneer of public art with an acclaimed international reputation of creating projects and installing works in the UK and many other countries, was delivered.

The idea of a public voice that contributes to the artwork is a theme of Newling’s practice and he discussed this in relation to the Derby Arboretum as Britain’s first public park.
The success of the launch was possible thanks to the hard work and the collaboration of Artcore’s staff and volunteers, sponsors and the community.
