This is Derby
This Is Derby is an exciting project for young people in Derby, led by Derby County Community Trust in collaboration with Derby Cultural Education Partnership and Derby Sport Forum. The project is funded by the Derby Opportunity Area fund via the Department for Education. We are offering a range of opportunities to take part in arts, sport and creative activities around the city. The activities are taking place in schools, community centres, youth clubs, cultural and sporting venues in Derby.
The activities are FREE, fun and designed to help young people aged 5 to 18 years to develop essential life skills. Skills such as confidence, motivation, resilience and communication are crucial to young people achieving their potential. Giving young people from all backgrounds a greater opportunity to develop these skills will support social mobility.
The programme has lots of opportunities for young people to lead and choose the activities which take place and to help design activities in their local community. This Is Derby will give young people a voice to make a change in their community and the confidence to feel that they can make a difference to their own lives and the way their community runs.
This Is Derby has been funded through Essential Life Skills funding from the Department for Education, as one of the 12 Opportunity Areas.
Over the October half term weekends we toured the city with This is Derby taking part in music, sport, and creative art activities. We went to Arboretum Park to enjoy the graffiti, urban circus acts, music performances, and performed live Rangoli art.
Throughout November and December we’ve delivered workshops in schools and community centres throughout Derby, teaching children new art skills and unlocking their own creativity. From mask making to printing, Word Art to concertina books there were some amazing creations along the way.
On 2nd November we opened our doors to the children of Derby and had a day exploring carnival, music, arts and sports with Baby People, Derby County Community Trust, emccan and Music Partnership and of course of you who joined us for this “This Is Derby” event! We had a lot of fun, it was great seeing so many happy faces and we look forward to what’s to come.
