As part of The Web of Water project on the 17th of May, Artcore organised a trip to the annual well-dressing event in Etwall, where residents from the divers communities of Derby went along to explore and understand the tradition of Derbyshire: Well Dressings.
The local communities from Etwall came together to create magnificent well-dressings, one of which was based on a number of Shakespeare’s plays, including Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Another well-dressing was based an old English nursery rhyme about the old woman who lived in a shoe. Altogether there were nine well-dressings beautifully hand-crafted from bright and colourful natural materials.
Apart from the well-dressings, live entertainment was provided including a music band, dancing and a puppet show, as well as stalls with varieties of different foods, craft fairs, and stalls with jewellery, woodwork and toys, and a gallery full of paintings made by Etwall locals was set up especially for the event.
The day was a success and we all had lots of fun, we thoroughly enjoyed the sunshine and also having a look at lots of unique stalls. Everyone got involved in ‘Having a go’ at a well dressing and enjoyed the experience
